Hi, I’m Sam
Multi-instrumentalist, early music specialist, doctoral student at UofT, theorist, philosopher, daydreamer, outdoorsman, at-heart minimalist, gustatorian, neologist
What I Think
Music is one part creative expression, one part technical discipline, and another part theoretical syntax. Traditional methods introduce these skills hierarchically, with technique as the foundation, theory in the middle tier, and expression at some pinnacle that can only be attained through mastery of the former two skills. In truth, the three are inextricable, overlapping and evolving at all stages of artistic development.
How I Teach
Integrated Music Education
An ability to grasp the nuanced interplay of theoretical and expressive aspects of music is not limited only to the most analytically oriented or gifted individuals. In my teaching, I illuminate the potential of each student by understanding their unique experiences and leveraging all learning styles and intelligences. Musical excellence is not possessed through birthright nor long-suffering but rather is an experience available to anyone of curious mind and intrepid spirit.
